Introduction

This is the go-to system for sheepshead: the Sheepshead Bait Bag from Mossy Head Bait Company.

While many anglers rely on fiddler crabs or shrimp, shellfish like oysters, clams, and mussels are proven to catch more fish — especially when used with the bait bag system. In fact, it’s routine to catch multiple sheepshead on a single bait.

Why Shellfish Work Better Than Crabs or Shrimp

  • Shellfish release strong scent and attract sheepshead consistently.

  • Oysters, Clams, Mussles and barnacles are abundant and a stable for Sheepshead

  • These baits are stationary, the fish does not have to chase shrimp or crabs to feed

  • Cracking crabs releases more scent and the bait bags keeps the cracked crab on the hook

  • With the bait bag, you can combine baits (e.g., crab + oyster) for extra attraction.

  • Many of these baits can be havested by the anglers saving tons of money on bait (free bait)

  • Shellfish makes great inexpensive chum and chuming is a proven method to get Sheepshead feeding

    Tips for Maximizing Your Catch

    • Always use the lightest line and weight and smallest hook you think you can get away with. Then adjust

    • Chum if you have it (highly recommended) but do not over chum, just a hand full at a time

    • Fish on or near the bottom with a rig of your choice near the chum (if chumming)

    • Cast near structure, where sheepshead naturally congregate. If there is a current, fish the down current side of structure

    • If no bite in 45 seconds, lightly lift your bait off the bottom about a foot then slowly let it settle back down

    • If no fish hook ups in 20 minutes move to next likely spot and repeat process.
